The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has named Miguel Wong as its prospect for possible qualification to the 3rd Youth Olympic Games with the association submitting his name to the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) to send to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for consideration as a possible candidate/prospect for Universality Allocated Place/Position.
“With the third Youth Olympic Games scheduled for Buenos Aires, Argentina in the Summer of 2018 coming into focus, the Junior international calendar of events for eligible players will be heightened with much activity as eligible world table tennis players seek qualification in the various continental championships and Junior circuit events,” a release from the GTTA noted.
One such Championship for players in the Latin American region is the Latin America Continental qualification event for the 3rd Youth Olympic Games scheduled for May 12-14 in Santo Domingo, Dominica Republic.
“This will see Wong venturing across to the Dominican Republic to participate and seek qualification at the Latin America continental qualification event scheduled for April 12-14, 2017 in Santo Domingo Dominican Republic,” the release added.
“Miguel is a talented, disciplined athlete one whom the association feels has a long-term future in the sport and the potential to reach higher levels if given the correct nurturing, support and exposure. His participation is this event, while offering the opportunity to qualify, also enhances chances of gaining a universality place,” the GTTA circular continued.
Given the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) position on Universality allocated provisions (where preference for Universality Places is given to countries/athletes attending the many qualification events and Junior circuit events under the ITTF umbrella) in addition to possible selection to the ITTF ‘With the Future in Mind’ Road to Buenos Aires programme, Wong’s participation in this event is seen as key for the association.
“The association had another prospect that we feel would have represented a great investment in the like of Nickolus Romain, however we are only allowed one nominee,” the release said. The GOA has pledged its support to send Wong to this key event.
