The old adage, ‘age is just a number’ is apt in describing the performances of Buddy’s

Gym Martin Webster, Space Gym’s ‘Big’ John Edwards and Hardcore Gym’s Farouk Abdool, all Masters athletes who rewrote the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting records books on Sunday last at the Fitness Express Intermediates / Masters Championships held at the National Gymnasium.
On a day which also saw a number of young, up and coming stars, it was the veterans who stole the show with some fascinating displays of power that had the small but appreciative crowd on their feet.
Competing in the Masters 2 category, Webster, who captured the 93kg Masters 2 Classic 1st place, smashed three records all previously held by Errol ‘Big Man’ Henry. The Buddy’s Gym member first set a new Squat record of 195.5kg (431lbs) to blow away Henry old mark of 195kg.
Next up for Webster was a new record in the Benchpress of 135kg to knock over Henry’s old record of 120kg; and to close off a memorable day, Webster set a new Total record of 555.5kg to topple Henry’s old mark of 555kg.
Edwards, campaigning in the Masters 2 120kg Classic division, easily won this category with a Total of 750kg, Wilks 491.381.
Living true to his call name of ‘Big’, Edwards set a new National 120kg Open and Masters 2 Benchpress record of 200kg (441lbs) erasing his own previous record which had stood at 182.5.
Edwards informed that his performance is an unofficial South American and Caribbean Record and he will continue training as he aims to break the world record which stands at 212kg.
Fierce rival of Edwards over the years, Berbician Farouk Abdool, who won the 120kg Masters 1 Classic 1st place, was not to be left out of the limelight as he too set a new standard by knocking over his old Squat record 277.5kg whilst setting a new National Open Classic record of 282.5kg.
