The five suspects who were intercepted at Glasgow Village on Saturday yesterday appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court, shackled, to answer to three charges.
Trevon McKenzie, Michael Embrack, Malcolm Henry, Seon Brown and James Arthur stood before the court as the charges were read to them. They were charged with having in their possession without lawful excuse, house breaking implements that included one crowbar and one screwdriver; possession of firearm (a .32 Semi Automatic Pistol) without being the holder of a firearm license and possession of ammunition (13 live rounds) without being the holder of a license. The men were not required to plead to the first charge but pleaded guilty to the latter.
McKenzie is said to be an ex-cop who was interdicted for an alleged drug deal.
Attorney-at-law Charandass Persaud who represented the men in his request for bail for the firearm and ammunition charges stated that it has not been ascertained that the men were all carrying the gun and ammunition, presuming that it was found somewhere other than in the possession of the men. Based on that, he requested that bail be considered.
However, Prosecutor Leon Robertson objected to bail on the grounds that all five of the men are and were before the court for previous offences including, Robbery Under Arms, Break and Enter and Larceny and Trafficking in Narcotics.
Attorney Persaud further pushed for bail to be considered by stating that the men have not tried to dodge the courts for their previous offences and there is no reason that they will not attend the hearing. He also gave reason that until the ballistics tests are completed only then can it be confirmed that it was indeed a firearm.
Bail was subsequently denied by Magistrate Moore and the men were remanded to prison until June 2, 2017 for report.
As the men exited the New Amsterdam court relatives of the five accused hurled expletives towards reporters as they tried to get a shot of the five men. The accused were even encouraged by relatives to hide their identities. Then came threats to damage media equipment. One of the men even tried to spit on the reporters while the others proudly showed their middle fingers while the relatives cheered on in the background.
McKenzie, of Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice; Embrack, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam; Henry, of Pilot Street, New Amsterdam; Brown, of Fort Ordinance, East Canje; and Archer, of Dazzell Housing Scheme, were intercepted in motor vehicle PNN 7770 at Glasgow Village by the police mobile patrol on Saturday.
The vehicle was subsequently subjected to a search by the ranks when a firearm, thirteen live rounds, a crowbar, a wig, a screwdriver and a rope was discovered. The vehicle was said to be circling a particular area at Glasgow Village when they were caught. Two of the men reportedly tried to escape on foot but were eventually caught. They were all arrested, the items were lodged and the vehicle was also lodged at the Central Police Station. The vehicle was confirmed as a rented motor car from the Corentyne area.
