Dear Editor,
It’s welcome news to hear that a project study has been submitted for the new proposed Harbour Bridge. However I feel that the proposed site of the bridge should be reconsidered. The proposed site will necessitate the spending of scarce funds for relocation of substantial properties and in a way the redeveloping of established housing areas on both banks of the river. The housing in these areas is upscale and any relocation would be very costly. The better route to my mind would be from Vriesland over to New Hope. A link to the East Coast corridor and the airport and the Linden/Soesdyke/Mabura network could now be established.
This would blend well into the proposed road link to Brazil. The problem with our roads here in Guyana is that we tend to mix up community roads with highways, hence the carnage and bottle necks that we have to face daily. On the East Bank we have the land space for an industrial complex where we can place a 69KV substation and thus be of great service. The new power station on the West Demerara could send its power via a 69KV feeder to this new industrial area. The areas surrounding the new road links should not be bordered by housing areas. Placing housing in these areas would tend to repeat the mistakes of the past. Highways should pass mainly through industrial areas and not through built-up areas.
