The sister of a 57-year-old taxi driver, who was strangled and dumped in a canal over a year ago, is offering a reward for the arrest and prosecution of his killers.
The sister says the sum is being offered because relatives do not feel that enough is being done to locate a prime suspect in the killing.
That individual is said to have fled to Suriname.
The body of Colin Clark, called ‘Old Boy’, of Crane, West Coast Demerara, was found on December 3, 2015, under a bridge in Uitvlugt.
Someone had strangled Clarke with a strip of barbed wire, which had sticks tied to both ends.
Clarke’s body was found six days after he had disappeared. He was reportedly last seen alive on November 27, 2015, when he picked up a male passenger near a bar at the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling.
Clarke had told a friend that he was soliciting passengers near the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling when a tall, fair-complexioned man with dreadlocks and “plenty gold teeth” attempted to hire him. Because the man had “a funny accent”, Clarke had said that he found it difficult to make out what the man was saying, and asked a female taxi driver to take the passenger.
The woman driver reportedly took the man to Crane, West Coast Demerara, and the man reportedly paid her $1,000.
Later that day, the same man reportedly approached Clarke and asked to be taken to Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo. Clarke reportedly agreed, and told the friend that the man sat in the back seat.
After arriving at their destination, Clare reportedly took the passenger to a back street in another community. Later, the passenger reportedly stopped near a house and engaged in a heated conversation with a woman. He then returned to the car and Clarke took him back to Vreed-en-Hoop, where the passenger gave Clarke $5,000.
At around 3.00 pm that same day, the same passenger reportedly approached Clarke again and requested to be taken back to Tuschen. Clarke reportedly picked him up.
He was never seen alive again.
The Toyota Allion Clarke was driving was subsequently found several days later under a house at Perth, Mahaicony, East Bank Demerara. While the licence plates were missing, the vehicle was intact.
Detectives also found Clarke’s driver’s licence in the vehicle.
The property at which the car was found belonged to an elderly couple.
The husband told investigators that a man had brought the car to the house and had asked the resident to keep it, until he returned from Suriname. Because the man was an acquaintance of his son, who was out of the country, the homeowner agreed.
But after the man failed to return to collect the car, the homeowner became suspicious and contacted the police.
Clarke’s siblings are convinced that robbery was not the motive for his death. They point to the fact that nothing was stolen from the car.
“This killing is a ‘set-up,’ this is no robbery,” one relative said. “The people (owners) get back their car intact.”
