A South Ruimveldt woman is in custody after she arrived at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Thursday night with over $9M in foreign currency but failed to declare it.
SOCU has detained a South Ruimveldt woman after she was discovered with US$44,000 at CJIA Thursday night but had failed to declare it.
According to the police yesterday, the 36-year-old woman has US$44,688 in her possession but did not tell security officials that she had the money.
Regulations state that all passengers coming into Guyana has to declare any cash that is in excess of US$10,000.
The woman was detained by ranks of the police’s Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU).
She had just arrived aboard a St. Lucia flight that landed 20:00hrs.
Guyana has passed tough anti-money laws that allows for prosecution and seizures of properties believed to be from ill-gotten gains.
Border security has full powers to questions persons at airports and crossings to determine the source of large cash transportation.
