-Swag Entertainment through to tonight’s final
Dave & Celina All Stars sent defending champion Team 25 crashing out of this year’s
Linden Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Competition with a convincing 2-0 win in semi-final action on Thursday night, at the Silver City Tarmac.
It therefore means that a new champion will be crowned this evening when the final is played, at the Mackenzie Market Tarmac.
Their opponents will be Swag Entertainment who crushed Jermaine & family Silver Bullets 4-1 and could very well go into tonight’s final as firm favourites to win the title.
Played before another big crowd, the opening encounter between Team 25 and Dave & Celina All Stars started out in cagey fashion as both teams focused on knocking the ball around in a bid to ease the tension.
However, that all changed following Dave & Celina All Stars opening goal which came in the fourth minute when Keon Sears’ shot on goal rebounded off the opposing defender’s leg, before trickling over the line.
It meant that the champs had to increase the tempo, but the All Stars did not sit back and defend their slim lead, instead they orchestrated some threatening raids themselves and talisman Rawle ‘Boney’ Gittens should have converted a clear chance, but his effort landed inches outside the left upright much to the relief of the Team 25 side.
Team 25 also had their opportunity to level the proceedings, but Teon Stewart’s right-footed missile struck the upright and rebounded into play.
Gittens was again unfortunate two minutes later when his shot was booted into touch inches from creeping over the goalline.
The teams went to the break with the All Stars clinging to a slim 1-0 advantage and all to play for in the final period.
Urged on by their respective band of supporters the two teams entertained the fans with some exquisite football, but solid defending was the feature of the second half battle.
Stewart was denied in the 23rd minute by another impressive act of defending and this happened before Sears hit the crossbar.
However, the All-Stars Kennard Simon eased the squeeze for his team when he fired in from the left flank one minute from full time.
The final whistle sounded shortly after to hand the All Stars a final spot.
In the other semi-final, Swag Entertainment’s star player Colwyn Drakes continued his remarkable goalscoring run when he hammered in a treble in their 4-1 victory over Silver Bullets.
Drakes opened his account in the fourth minute and added two more in the 25th and 32nd to take his tally to six so far in the competition.
Strike partner Shane Luckie was also not to be outdone and he netted the other goal in the ninth minute.
Jermaine Samuels’ 19th minute strike was the lone response for Silver Bullets.
The two losers will battle for third place.
The winning team will take away $400,000 and the championship trophy along with the opportunity to play in the National Playoffs.
Second, third and fourth placed finishers receive $150,000, $75,000 and $50,000 respectively.
Starting time is 21:00hrs.
Meanwhile, all four teams will participate in the National Playoffs.
The other sponsor on board is Colours Boutique.
