Divisional Commander, Kevin Adonis, has confirmed that a ‘C’ Division constable attached to an East Coast Demerara police station is now under close arrest for allegedly demanding an undisclosed sum of money to release a minibus which was previously detained by the police.
A source told Kaieteur News that the Constable allegedly demanded the money from an undercover official as part of the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR)’s sting operation.
The source who refused to disclose the Constable’s indentify, said the sting operation was initiated amidst numerous complaints over the conduct of the rank.
Commander Adonis said that the matter is still under investigation.
Sting operations has somewhat become a regular feature in Guyana. Back in 2015, a police sergeant was caught red-handed collecting a $50,000 bribe.
He was detained after the cash he had allegedly solicited from a businessman, was found in his office.
The incident reportedly occurred after the businessman was arrested and taken to the police station to which the sergeant is seconded, on allegations of threatening someone with a firearm.
While there, the sergeant reportedly demanded $50,000 to have the matter settled.
The businessman reportedly agreed to go through with the transaction, but instead reported to the sergeant’s superiors, who set up a sting operation with staff from the OPR.
Last year, the operations had intensified amidst an apparent increase in reported cases of bribery.
Assistant Police Commissioner David Ramnarine threatened to expel traffic and anti-crime patrol members from the force who solicit money from the public or stop civilians even if no offence has been committed.
“There are certain matters once you are charged criminally or departmentally or what we are not going to waste taxpayers’ money to interdict you and put you on half pay, comrades; we are not going to do that.
“Once you fall within a certain year period service out you go, because that is where we have to start and one of the best ways,” he said to members of the Traffic and Anti-Crime patrols at a meeting held at the Police Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary last September.
