Dear Editor,
I am kindly requesting that my letter be published in your letter column section; the reason being I was denied my pension from the NIS under the pretence that I did not make the necessary 750 contributions. My name is Seepersaud Ramsamooj and my NIS number is A1662899. I began working at Blairmont Sugar Estate in 1974 and left in 1993. I was a regular worker and was never disqualified from employment during my nineteen years of service. I filed for my pension in 2015, since then two years have passed and yet the NIS cannot produce all my contributions correctly.
Based on the figures the NIS has and the yearly contributions which are as follows 1974-33,1975-22,1976-45,1977-30,1978-47, 1979-50,1980-49, 1981-14,1982-17,1983-36,1984-45,1985-29,1986-41.1987-42,1988-47,1989-14,1990-52,1991-51,1992-49,and1993-27 – these are the total contributions the NIS has for my records which totals to 740 contributions; thus the cause for denial.
The NIS should look at the trend of my yearly contributions and it can be clearly seen that something is definitely wrong with the years 1981,1982, and 1989. They should find out if the Estate was closed for those years and if any employees were working at that time. I do not have any records; it is the duty of the NIS to furbish that information and to provide it to employees. Blairmont sugar estate deducted money from my weekly pay packet for the NIS; it is not my fault if the estate did not post my contributions correctly and that should not be the reason for the NIS to show gross neglect to its contributor. This is how we the Guyanese pensioners are being treated with contempt and disrespect it seems no one cares.
I thought with the new government things would have changed, but it seems to be worse. The General Manager if I have it right should take some time out of her busy schedule to look into the serious matter of pensioners and their problems. We have contributed to building GUYANA and it is very frustrating for us when no one cares. Our weekly contributions to the NIS were good. It created employment for a lot of fellow Guyanese to work in these institutions, but when it is time to receive our pensions we are treated like some foreign object from Mars that never existed. We will not forget the runaround we have received from these NIS employees.
