Despite the adverse weather conditions for the two days preceding the third annual Blairmont
Floodlight Cup Reload held at the Blairmont ground on Sunday and on the day of the eight-team tournament, officials of the all-day Event which culminated under lights, deemed it a success and were high in praise for the excellent drainage system at the West Bank Berbice venue and high quality covers the club purchased.
The first game of the tournament was scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs at a venue has which hosted First-Class cricket in the past but after hard work by the ground staff, the action eventually stated at 11:00hrs and the matches were reduced to 8/8 encounters from the 10 overs per side games that were originally planned.
But when the dust had settled just past Mid-Night on Monday morning, Blairmont Blazers (BB) urged on by a crowd of close 700 fans in a festive atmosphere, had defeated Cotton Tree Die Hard (CTDH) by 32 runs in the Final.
Under a clear night sky in windy conditions, BB elected to bat and led by an entertaining unbeaten 54 from 26 balls decorated with three fours and four sixes from Man-of-the-Match, opener Martin Singh, galloped to 96-1 in 8 overs.
Parmanand Ramdhan and Nick Ramsaroop (13 each) supported Singh, who also took the MVP of the tournament and batsman with the most sixes Awards.
Pooran Persaud (1-23) got the only success for CTDH who started the chase in pugnacious fashion; blasting 32 in the first two overs as Pooran Persaud set the venue, which produced Test players Roy Fredericks and Brandon Bess, on fire.
But once Persaud, who smashed a rapid 16-ball 31 with three fours and two sixes, fell in the fifth over, they never recovered as Waqar Hassan (3-24) and Kassim Khan (2-12) put the brakes on the scoring and reduced CTDH to 55/5 after the seven overs.
Kassim Khan (Blazers) captured the most wickets (5) from three matches, while Ravi Seecharran (Kendall’s Union) had the best bowling figures of the tournament (4-4). Singh’s 50 was the lone half-century, while Albion’s National player Jonathon Foo made 49 against Cotton Tree.
Bush Lot Cavaliers, No 48 Challengers, DeEdward, Albion, Omesh X1, Young & Restless were the other teams in the competition. Cotton Tree beat Cold Fusion by 45 runs, Blazes got the better of No 48 Challengers by 13 runs and Cotton Tree beat Albion by eight wickets in the play-offs after the completion of the preliminary rounds.
After the morning showers there were no other interruption as the first game begun to bowl off a day of fun and frolic for the entire family.
DJ Hakeem provided pulsating music, while there was live ball-by- ball commentary at the ground by International Radio Commentator Inderjeet Persaud as exuberant spectators, pumping air-horns, created a riveting atmosphere. When Arshad Khan, a supporter of the Cold Fusion team, held a brilliant one-handed catch, the crowd celebrated as much as he did. Khan was instantly awarded $10,000 by the club.
In the Dominos Competition, Team – GOLD copped the first place, while team- FINE ANTS finished second and team ROYALS ended third. The king Domino title was won by Ken from Blairmont Settlement.
At the presentation ceremony, officials of the Blairmont Club thanked all participating teams, spectators and sponsors for their contributions in making the event a successful one.
