Guyanese weightlifters continue to define themselves on the international scene and overseas based, Howard Bovell, lifted a combined total of 91kg to win a bronze medal when the World Masters Games concluded in Auckland, New Zealand, last week.
Competing in the 75 – 79 age group, in the 77kg weight class, Bovell finished behind Russian, Boris Didendko with 122kg and Piotr Kowalewski of Poland with 148kg.
The achievement became even more commendable when it was noted that Bovell sustained an injury to his groin a few days before the games. Further, he competed devoid of moral support as few Guyanese attended the meet and his colleagues in Guyana were unable to attend due to a lack of funding.
Last February, the GAWU selectors had named a four member team to attend the Games but a paucity of funds forced them out of contention.
