Silvercity/Alleys/Valleys walked away with the grand prize of $1.2M as they emerged champions of the CBR Hotshots Stagbowl Football Tournament in a final that had fans sitting on the edges of their seats at the McKenzie
Sports Club Ground Wednesday night last.
The first game pitted Silvertown/Canvas City/West Watooka combined and Blue Berry Hill playing for third place.
Jamal Haynes opened the account in the 48thminute for Silvertown/Canvas City/West Watooka combined to loud cheers from their supporters. Blue Berry Hill were not daunted and tried to equalize but missed three goals, one hitting the cross bar and some shots wide of goal. The first half ended 1 nil in favour of Silvertown/Canvas City/West Watooka.
From the sound of the whistle at the beginning of the second half it was evident that the combined team were all out to secure their lone goal and Blue Berry Hill was out to score goals. Balls were going all over the crossbar and wide of the goal post. However, in the 67th minute Sheldon Holder got passed the goal keeper and nailed the equalizer.
The game continued with both teams trying to score the winning goal as the clock ticked, then in the 84th minute Gavin Morrison netted the winning goal for Blue Berry Hill.
At regulation time the score was 2-1 in favour of Blue Berry Hill.
Romel Bristol from Blue Berry Hill in the 28th minute and Jermain Granderson of Silvertown/Canvas City/West Watooka received yellow cards in the 61st and 65th minutes.
Just before the final game got started the promoter Rickland ‘Tallo’ Hutson thanked the fans for supporting and the teams, for coming out to represent their communities. “The aim of this is to get footballers more involved in their community and not just to play football.” He also said that next year the tournament will be bigger and better with fabulous prizes.
President of the Guyana Football Federation Wayne Forde, who was present, congratulated Rickland Hutson and team for promoting such an exciting and successful tournament. “It is a real pleasure for me to see the excitement from the fans and to see football at this level in the community. The Linden community has a faithful partner in the Guyana Football Federation and we will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that Linden will be treated with the respect they deserve in the arena of football. So rest assured that the international friendly you had a few weeks ago is the beginning of many things to come in the future.”
Forde said he looks forward to football growing from strength to strength in Linden.
The finalists were then met by the promoter Rickland Hutson, President of the GFF Wayne Forde and the Mayor of Linden Carwyn Holland.
Both teams fought for goals but their defence upped the ante as the first half ended nil all.
At the sound of the whistle for the second half Silvercity/Alleys/Valleys seemed determined to score and fans were calling on ‘Brown Boy’ to score and in the 50th minute Delon Lanferman netted the lone and winning goal for Silvercity/Alleys /Valleys/Roc/22 tried to equalize with their fans calling on their players and even though Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson tried to equalize he was well marked in the game and was not given a chance and at the end of regulation time it was 1 nil in favour of Silvercity/Alleys/Valleys.
Two yellow cards were given in the 6th and 51st minute to Konata manning and Kevin Reagan of Silvercity/Alleys/Valleys and to Jermain Fordyce in the 2nd minute and Ford Daniels in the 79th minute from Wisroc/Block 22.
Most Valuable Player and most goal scorer (7 goals) went to Delon Lafferman of Silvercity/Alleys/Valleys and Best mid fielder went to Konata Manning and John Waldron aka Brown Boy both from the winning team.
Coach of the Winning team Felix Inniss aka Coot said he was confident that his team would have won and he planned to rehabilitate the playfield in Silvercity as the community project he is mandated to do.
