Some 350 persons yesterday benefitted from a community outreach in Onderneeming
Village on the Essequibo Coast. The outreach was a collaborative initiative between G Division’s Commanders, Stephen Mansell, the Ministry of Health and the Hope for Nation Foundation. This move was aimed at assisting residents in the Onderneeming community that are in need materially.
The Onderneeming sandpit village is a newly established community that is working towards development. Unfortunately the Sandpit village is plagued with a high rate of unemployment, particularly amongst youths. This in turn, had led to an increase in the community’s crime rate.
In an effort to eradicate a percentage of the community’s problems, Commander Mansell collaborated with the Ministry of Health and the Hope for Nation Foundation.
Commander Mansell said that he hopes to form a relationship with the community in an effort to foster development.
“I’ve been on the Coast for just about one month now. The second week as I was passing through the Onderneeming Sandpit I saw a lot of young people unemployed with nothing to do.” The commander urged youngsters to enroll at the Essequibo Technical Institute and the Zara Institution for Computer Repairs. Commander Mansell then used the opportunity to introduce a new programme called “see something say something”. The “see something say something” programme would make the community safer since residents would have the opportunity to call the commander directly to report suspicious criminal activities in their communities.
The Hope for the Nation Foundation, on the other hand, has been working with Governmental and Non-Governmental organizations, donating food and other relief items to needy communities.
The foundation generously donated garments and books to the Sandpit community, yesterday; while the Ministry of Health dispatched medical professionals to assist in the outreach. Residents received over the counter drugs in the form of powders, pills and syrups.
Elderly folks had the opportunity to get their blood pressure tested for free.
