At a time when many local businesses are reducing their workforce and cutting salaries, the Directors
of Movie Towne Incorporated are gearing up to employ about 800 locals, to work at the massive entertainment complex being erected along the Turkeyen Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
According to the proprietor, Guyana-born Derek Chin, the project which was initially pegged at US$30M, is now approaching US$45M but the Guyana market, according to the company’s directors, is worth the investment.
Construction on the complex is moving rapidly apace, with the company’s directors eyeing a December completion.
The “ultra-modern complex” is located on 10 acres of land with a 200,000-square foot building, and will be offering an array of attractions and leisure amenities for families and entertainment seekers to enjoy.
Chin told Kaieteur News that the Cineplex will be outfitted with “eight state-of-the-art screens with some of the latest 2D and 3D Digital Cinema Technology, Dolby Surround audio technology, luxurious seating capacity of 2,000 and a diverse food concession to cater to any appetite.”
It was explained too, that among the attractions, would be a 60,000-square foot Massy Stores Super Centre. “…as well as a vibrant shopping mall with exciting retail businesses from Guyana and Trinidad. Many of the popular local, regional and international restaurant franchises have already signed on including New Thriving and Ruby Tuesday. There are also plans for a live entertainment area and a few amusement rides to add to the magic of this complex.”
Responding to Kaieteur News, Chin said that he holds Guyana very close to his heart, hence efforts to make Movie Towne a Caribbean venture, began here.
“Movie Towne Guyana is set to transform the lives of the people of Guyana like it has done for Trinidad and Tobago, where it has emerged as the number one destination for family recreation, movie-going, shopping and dining for people of all ages, all ethnicities and all income brackets.”
Recognising the cost of energy to be more expensive in Guyana than Trinidad and Tobago, Chin, along with the University of Guyana, embarked on a project to establish a solar farm.
A Memorandum of Understanding to this effect was signed on Thursday evening. Once up and running, the farm is expected to have sufficient solar panels, capable of powering not only the entire Turkeyen campus, but the Movie Town Complex as well.
Over the next few weeks, technical teams from Trinidad are expected to arrive in Guyana to conduct the full study to determine what the establishment of the solar farm would entail.
