Mark Rankin produced a consistent and effective spell of medium pace bowling as Essequibo
registered their first win of the Guyana Cricket Board Igloo Ice Cream Under-17 50-over inter county tournament, beating Demerara by three wickets in the second round yesterday.
Rankin bagged 5-23 from 9.5 overs to help bowl out Demerara for 127 in 41.5 overs at Bourda. The home team was to regret their decision to bat on a difficult pitch as impressive fast bowler Reyaz Khan had opener Sachin Singh (00) caught at the wicket off the very first ball before fellow opener Adrian Hinds attempted to pull a ball that kept low from Leon Swami and was bowled for four leaving the score at 20-2.
Alphius Bookie and Robin Williams added 32 for the third wicket but after hitting four fours Williams failed to control a cut shot and was caught at point off Lance Roberts for 18. Rankin trapped skipper Paradesh Balkishun and Bookie lbw for 1 and 18 respectively before accounting for Ashmead Nedd (04) to leave Demerara at 71-6.
Andrew Samaroo was then taken off Roberts without scoring, but useful contributions from Hemnauth Dindyal (18) Elion Whyte (12) and Qumar Torrington (10) saw Demerara to their eventual total. Roberts 2-18, Swami 2-22 and Khan 1-47 were the other successful bowlers.
Openers Orlando Jailall and Kevin Christian put on 38 for the opening stand to set Essequibo on course. Jailall, who timed the ball well struck Torrington to the cover boundary and drove Elion Whyte through mid-on for four before using his feet to Nedd and smashed him for a straight six. The left-handed Jailall continued to look positive, but when on 23 he got a ball from Balkishun that did not rise above his ankle and was bowled. The level-headed Christian and Azeem Mohamed continued to frustrate their opponents as they added 42 for the second wicket before Christain was bowled by Nedd for 29.
Balkishun then sent back Mohamed for 16 before Nedd bowled Swami for eight leaving Essequibo at 104-4. While Roberts kept his composure rotating the strike, Essequibo lost Badesh Parsotam who was bowled by Balkishun without scoring; Devendra Mohan (01) and Saeed Hakh (00) both needlessly run out to be at 115-7.
But Roberts who remained unbeaten on 29 and Khan (06*) saw their team home as they finished on 130-7 in 38.1 overs. Balkishun had 3-26 and Nedd 2-18. Rankin was named man-of-the-match.
