A pugnacious 43 from the inform Alex Algoo and three wickets apiece from Kelvon Anderson, Mahendra Dorasami and Kelvin Omrao powered Berbice to a second win in three days when they destroyed the National
Chairman of the National youth selectors Nazimul Drepaul hands over the MOM Award to Alex Algoo at Everest yesterday.
Under-15s at Everest by 9 wickets in the second round of the Igloo Ice Cream U-17 Inter-County 50-over cricket tournament.
The National U-15s won the toss and elected to bat in sultry conditions on a flat track and fast outfield and started in promising fashion before slumping from 33 without loss to 70 all out in 34.3 overs.
Openers Ricardo Ramdeho, who struck a boundary in his 29-ball 16 and Shamar Yearwood, whose 12 took 45 balls and included one four; once this duo was separated only Abudal Ramsammy, who labored for 21 balls to make 10 with a single boundary, reached double figures.
Kelvon Anderson (3-2), Mahendra Dorasami (3-13) and Kelvin Omrao (3-16) all bowled well for Berbice who galloped to 71-1 to record an emphatic win.
Although Ramdeho and Yearwood did not exactly set the Everest sward on fire they occupied the crease for 13 overs and reached the boundary twice in a cautiously constructed 33-run partnership before Yearwood was caught behind by Junior Sinclair to trigger a dramatic collapse.
Mahendra Dindyal (3), Marvan Prashad (3) and 14-year-old Essequibo U-17 player Sheldon Charles (0) in his second year in the Guyana U-15 side, all departed with the score on 42.
One run later when Daniel Dharamdat had his stumps knocked out by Dorasami at 43-6, the writing was on the wall as 10 wickets tumbled for 37 runs. The right-handed Algoo, who blasted an entertaining 81 on Tuesday against Essequibo at the same venue, played confidently and was not afraid to go after the bowling; dominating a quick-fire 61-run opening stand with Brandon Mangal (14*) before he attempted clear the boundary for the fourth time and was caught at long-on; Daniel Motoo making the break through with victory just nine runs away.
The final round is set for tomorrow with the U-15s facing Essequibo at Everest and defending Champions Demerara opposing Berbice at Bourda. (Sean Devers)
