Safraz Ameer, who was at the time driving a vehicle which crashed and killed his wife, has been charged with causing her death two years later.
Ameer, 37, of Helena Village, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on March 8, 2015 at Pirara Trail, Rupununi, he drove motor van PRR 6731 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Vimala Balgobin.
He was granted $200,000 bail and instructed to return to court on June 6.
According to reports, Ameer and his wife had just left Annai, heading back to Lethem when the accident occurred.
The woman who was 30 years old at the time died on the spot after the vehicle plunged off a bridge.
It was reported that Balgobin, who was the Project Coordinator for the Rural Enterprise and Agricultural Development (READ) in the Ministry of Agriculture, had left Georgetown on March 6, 2015 for Lethem where she was scheduled to visit various areas and perform duties.
She and her husband were reportedly on their way to put fuel in the vehicle when the vehicle skidded off the bridge.
An attorney for the defendant told the court that the accident was unfortunate. He requested that his client be admitted to bail because he has been very cooperative with police investigation.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore did not oppose to bail for Ameer but requested that it be substantial.
