Dear Editor,
There is only bad press about public health institutions but I thought it would be nice for me to share my experience at the East Bank Regional Hospital. I live in the new Diamond Scheme. A couple of weeks before Christmas 2016, I was unwell so I visited the nearest health institution. I was pleasantly attended to by a nurse who tested my blood pressure and immediately gave me a tab since it was very high. I was so nervous being there since I heard many ill things. However, I was soon after checked on by Dr. Michael Perreira.
I was asked my medical history and after several hours of fluctuating BP, the doctor admitted me. I spent the night and was given some medication and sent home the next day but was asked to return to run some blood tests. I returned as was required and my blood was taken for the blood work. I got the results approximately seven (7) days after and was prescribed some more medication and advised about my diet as there was an abnormal amount of creatinine in my kidneys.
There are many Cuban doctors at this hospital and many of them cannot explain the diagnosis nor can they advise patients in English. I was certainly not comfortable with this scenario so I was very happy to have a bilingual doctor who was very thorough in his analysis before he prescribed medications.
I am happy to say that after a few months of a healthy diet and lifestyle and following the doctor’s orders, my creatinine level has normalized and blood pressure is under control. I thank the nurses and Dr. Michael Perreia who were very attentive and informative. The conditions that you work in are appalling but you performed your duties diligently and certainly made an impact on me. Keep up the great work and thank you again.
