A Cuban national who claimed that he came to Guyana in search of a better life was on Tuesday ordered to pay a fine of $20,000 with an alternative of four weeks’ imprisonment. Daniel Palma Rameirez, 24, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that between March 1 and April 21, last, at Georgetown, he failed to comply with conditions subject to which any permit is granted.
Having being permitted to stay in Guyana from January 31 to February 28, last, he overstayed.
The man who resides in Havana, Cuba, arrived in Guyana on January 31. However, upon him going to apply for an extension of stay, it was discovered that he had already overstayed. The Cuban national will be escorted to the nearest port of exit upon payment of the fine or serving the prison term.
