Title holders Team 25 got off to an impressive start in this year’s Linden Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Competition which opened on Sunday evening, at the Mackenzie Market Tarmac, before another large crowd.
Playing without talisman Collie Hercules, who is said to be out of the country, the highly fancied Team 25 defeated South Stars 3-1 through goals from Tevin Crawford, Tean Stewart and Ryan Noel in the 2nd, 6th and 12th minutes respectively, while Steve Lancaster’s 14th minute strike was the lone response for the losers.
Jermaine and Family registered the most lop-sided win of the night when they hammered High Stars 6-1.
Damian Williams and Jermaine Samuels both fired in hat-tricks with the former netting his in the 4th, 12th and 14th minutes, while Samuels’ goals came in the 11th, 17th and 18th minutes.
On target for High Stars was Michael Henry, whose goal came in the 11th minute.
Amelia’s Ward Russians was another team to record a win after they cruised past Constab 3-1.
Shawn Daniels booted in a double in the 7th and 19th minutes, while an own goal in the 18th minute completed their tally. Samuel Gilbert’s 8th minute effort was not enough for Constab.
Dave and Celina All-Stars squeezed past Ripping Bullets 3-2 in a penalty shootout after regulation time ended 1-1.
Jonathan Fredericks handed Ripping Bullets the lead after six minutes, before Keon Sears equalised for Dave and Celina All Stars in the 8th minute.
Main Street Panthers clawed their way to a 3-1 triumph over Unknowns with Kevin Kennedy, Keshawn Dey and Osea Waddell netting in the 7th, 10th and 13th minutes, while an own goal in the 16th minute accounted for Ripping Bullets lone goal.
Veteran Wane Milo rolled back the year when he came on in the second period to net Dream Chasers lone goal after fourteen minutes which proved enough to beat Speightland 1-0.
Eagles squeezed past High Life 2-1 on penalty kicks after regulation time ended goalless, while High Rollers were 3-2 winners over Silvertown 3-2 in sudden death penalty kicks after both teams failed to score in regulation time.
Meanwhile, play resumes tonight with eight more matches, at the same venue.
Goal Getters go up against Good Fellas; Hardknocks engage Cherokee Park Ariama; Mile Star take on Coomacka; Colo Colo and Future Stars square off, while Amazings and Bourda All-Stars battle each other.
Attackers tackle Young Lions; Running Guns and Trainline Warriors match stride, before Swag Entertainment lock horns with Magic Stars.
Shortly, before the start of play on opening night, the teams that engaged each other in the first game had the opportunity to meet Linden Branch Manager Shondel Easton, Outdoor Event Manager Mortimer Stewart and Linden Branch Supervisor Shawn Grant.
The winning team will walk away with $400,000 and the championship trophy, while 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishers take home $150,000, $75,000 and $50,000 respectively.
