The court heard that on the day in question, the victim was walking north along Avenue of the Republic when Whyte rode up behind her on a bicycle and demanded she hand over the haversack containing the items.
However, the woman resisted and held onto her bag, Whyte then whipped out a knife from his waist and pointed it at her neck. The victim being fearful for her life handed over the bag and Whyte then made good his escape along Brickdam.
The victim raised an alarm and several persons give chase to the accused who then collided with a pedestrian on the Parika Bus Park.
Whyte was apprehended by public-spirited citizen and handed over to the police who escorted him to the Stabroek Police Outpost. At the outpost a search was conducted on his person and the articles were recovered.
The accused when told of the offence admitted to robbing the woman of her bag.
The magistrate before sentencing Whyte told him that she believes that the time he will be spending in prison will teach him a valuable lesson. She further stated that she hopes he learns from his mistake and should not go about stealing from persons.
She reprimanded him that he should work for what he wants since people work hard for what they want, and it is unfair for him to rob them.
