Dear Editor,
Please allow me to compliment Mr. Nandlall for telling some truth to Berbicians concerning the protest happening against this government on his weekly TV program that was held on Tuesday 18th April, 2017 on NTN. Mr. Nandlall was truthful when he mentioned that people are protesting against this government every day be it Parking Meters, VAT on Education, NIS for hire car drivers, sugar workers, rice farmers, etc. He was totally correct that people are protesting. But he was untruthful when he said the PPP is not involved in or organising the protests. So on one hand the man speaks some truth and on the other hand he lies. If the PPP is part of or organising the protest, he must tell us.
Why is it that a few weeks ago the rice farmers were asked to block the roads in protest against the land rental fee? Why is it that the President of RPA and PPP organisers were seen at several rice farmers’ protest holding placards? Why is it that GAWU’s President, who is also a PPP MP, is telling the sugar workers to strike so they cannot earn a day’s pay? Why is it that you had to ask the hire car drivers in east Berbice to protest in their numbers last Wednesday? Why is it that the PPP takes credit for all the protesting happening that Nandlall mentioned?
Mr. Nandlall, you didn’t mention the protest that you and your fellow PPP MPs started or maybe you forget. Well let me remind you about this new type of protest. In the Parliament you and the PPP MPs are protesting and walking out. The last in the Parliament was on the 13th April, 2017, when you and your comrades stood up to protest against the Speaker and walked out just before 10pm.
The former AG must tell the people why the speaker had to ask them to take their seats? It was because the former AG was disrespectful to the Speaker. The Speaker is the one that presides over the business of the National Assembly, not the Opposition leader or Mr. Nandlall. The speaker gives reasons why the motion cannot be carried and the House must respect such decisions. The PPP’s protest in Parliament shows that they are also part of the countrywide protesting that Nandlall says is ongoing. But I think that the government would give people their constitutional rights and allow them to protest and allow for freedom of expression. And under this government all are enjoying their democratic rights.
The former AG said (on the program) that the Speaker of the National Assembly is only shushing one set of people and those are the ones on the PPP’s side, not the government benches. Well, I saw the Speaker on several occasions asked members of the governing side to be quiet and retract statements at times. So, for you as the former AG to accuse the Speaker of being in favor of one side, it’s a shame. Mr. Nandlall went on to lash out at the Hon. Broomes, Minister within the Natural Resources Ministry, saying that she babbles like a radio and the Speaker says nothing to admonish her.
He went on to say that Hon. Ramjattan is half of the time drunk and preaches like an old man in the Parliament and the Speaker doesn’t hear him. The AG seems to be making lots of wild accusations against members of the government side in Parliament and the Speaker. He needs to stop. The former AG seems to be driving fear into persons by saying that every time people speak ill of the government their property will be liable for seizure according to the SARA bill. This is totally untrue. I once again call on the GNBA to monitor the political programs in Berbice because it is causing fear among our people and can lead to political unrest. The former AG said that nothing will stop him from speaking and that he will continue to do so and speak out against those that want to divide the nation. Well, it is the former AG that is trying to divide the nation by feeding on and preaching false information and by making racial comments publicly. He also said he is hunting elephants and will not be distracted by rabbits. Well, I hope that the rabbit gets the former AG searching for words to tell the truth to Berbicians and stop the racial comments.
