Dear Editor,
Millions of people around the world gather to observe International Earth Day, today under the theme Campaign in Environmental and Climate Literacy. Many will also use the opportunity to engage in tree planting exercises, clean-up activities and other acts of environmental stewardship that would seek to enhance parks, recreational facilities and other open spaces in their respective communities.
As we observe this important day, we must always bear in mind the strides made to care for the environment. Simultaneously, we should also consider the overarching threats and challenges the environment faces such as global warming and climate change.
Globally, we have made significant strides in cleaning our air, purifying our water and preserving our forest. However, all these efforts should be coupled with the need to provide more information and educational programmes, therefore the theme: “Campaign in Environmental and Climate Literacy” is truly timely and relevant. It is important that the nexus be drawn between education and change. The truth is with the advent of new media technology we have been more exposed to information that emphasizes the importance of exercising care for the environment. However, it is imperative that the information communicated is transitioned into positive behavioural change. At the level of the Council we recognize the importance of implementing environmental preservation measures. Hence, an Environment and Sustainable Committee was established with the mandate to provide the Council with general and specific advice and recommendations on environmental issues and to put in place measures and systems that would improve the working environment and quality of life for residents, visitors and businesses. Also, the committee would be proposing bylaws that would enhance and promote environmental sustainability.
It is anticipated in the ensuing year that the Council would embark on environmental education in schools and local communities in the City. Specific importance would be placed on solid waste management, climate change, global warming, energy conservation, urban forestation, pollution and their impact on the City of Georgetown. On International Earth Day, as we celebrate the gift of nature, let us commit to doing our part; let us encourage our families, neighbours, and friends to be more environmentally friendly. So that together we would make the environment safe and sustainable for all of us!
Patricia Chase-Greene JP
Mayor of Georgetown
