Very soon, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) will be in a better position to disrupt criminal networks responsible for organized and financial crimes. There is an upcoming training in Singapore, sponsored by Interpol and a member of the Guyana Police Force has been identified to attend.
Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, at his post cabinet briefing on Thursday, said that Inspector Prem Narine, who walked away with the 2016 Best Cop award, will attend the training session which will begin on May 22.
According to Harmon, the training will also equip the participant with the knowledge necessary to locate and arrest fugitives wanted at international levels as well as fugitives who have left their national jurisdiction to evade justice.
Hopefully, efforts will be made to arrest Marcus Brain Bisram who is said to be hiding out in the United States of America after allegedly organizing the plot to kill Berbice carpenter, Faiyaz Narinedatt at Number 70 Village, Berbice in November, last.
A wanted bulletin has been issued by the Guyana Police Force for Bisram. He has also been on Interpol wanted list for quite some time too.
Additionally, Harmon said that Cabinet has given its approval for participation for another Interpol training programme to be held from May 30 to 31 in Argentina. The training will address matters regarding the capability of firearms. Deputy Superintendant, Rafeek Ali will attend the training.
More training for public sector employees
Cabinet has also approved the attendance of Chabilall Ramsarup, Director General of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) at the Global platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Harmon explained that the global platform will be hosted by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction which will provide the international community its first opportunity to review the global process in the implementation of the Sendai Life Framework adopted in Japan in 2015.
The Sendai Framework is a 15-year voluntary, non-binding agreement which recognises that the State has the primary role to reduce disaster risk however; the responsibility should be shared with other stakeholders that include local government, private sector and other stakeholders.
It aims to achieve substantial reduction of disaster risk and loss of lives, livelihoods and health and in the economic, physical, social, cultural and environmental assets of persons, businesses, communities and countries.
The global platform will be held in Cancun, Mexico over five days from May 22.
Harmon said that Cabinet also granted approval for the attendance of a legal officer of the Child Care Protection Agency within the Ministry of Social Protection to participate in a training programme on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The Minister explained that the convention will be hosted by the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights which, “seeks to raise awareness among the Caribbean government officials about the convention on the rights of persons with disabilities”.
This convention will be held in Trinidad and Tobago from May 1 to May 4.
