Attorney at Law Mursaline Bacchus on Wednesday made an appearance for murder accused Munilall Sarjou, 47, a deportee of No. 68 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, who is on trial for the murder of 28-year-old Levan Chanderpaul.
Chanderpaul’s body was found in a sand pit at Corentyne, Berbice, on August 24, last.
It is alleged that between August 22 and August 24, 2016, Sardou, murdered Levan Chanderpaul.
The man had first appeared unrepresented before Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennon in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he was remanded to jail until April 19. On Wednesday the matter was subsequently transferred to the Springlands Magistrate’s Court after Sarjou appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh and was remanded to jail until May 25.
In court, attorney at law Bacchus made an application for the disclosure of the witnesses’ statements. The Magistrate subsequently issued the order.
However, Police Prosecutor Inspector Bernard Brown informed the court that the statements are not ready and that the file has been returned to Georgetown.
According to reports, Chanderpaul, who was suspected to be a pirate, was found in a backdam not far from his home. His body, which bore visible marks of violence, was discovered by a young man who was coming out of the backdam.
Sarjou, reportedly a drug dealer, was deported from Canada in 2009 after slashing a woman’s neck. It is believed that Chanderpaul’s killing stemmed from a drug deal between the victim and Sarjou.
According to information, the accused gave Chanderpaul money to purchase drugs but the fisherman failed to do so, instead taking the money and leaving the village.
Chanderpaul returned some months after and the two men made contact and shortly after the fisherman’s battered body was found in a sandpit.
According to reports, when detectives approached Sarjou last year to question him about the murder, he fled, leaving his vehicle behind.
The vehicle has since been impounded at the Skeldon Police Station. Sarjou was later apprehended.
When Chanderpaul was found his body had started to decompose. His head was battered and eyes were bulging. A post mortem examination conducted on the body by Dr. Vivikanand Brijmohan showed that he died from shock and hemorrhage and a fractured skull.
Chanderpaul was well known in the community and was charged numerous times with various offences including piracy.
