…now wanted on break and enter charge
The government and other authorities responsible for pardoning persons must take a thorough look at, and do diligent background checks of persons recommended for release, before setting them free. As it is, the system is not fool proof and is becoming an embarrassment at the moment.
A known kleptomaniac Uriel Amsterdam, called “Khan”, 22, of Cumberland and Fort Ordnance, East Canje, who has been in and out of prison on a number of misdemeanors, is the latest person to have been pardoned and soon after commits a crime.
He is now wanted on a charge of break and enter committed on Wednesday.
According to information, around 06:00 hrs, the man visited the home of Neil Joseph, a hire car driver at Betsy Ground, and told him that he was sent to him to inquire if there are any jobs. After Joseph answered in the negative the man left. Joseph them secured his premises, boarded his car and left for the road. Upon his return he noticed his place ransacked. After making further checks he noticed the place broken into and a laptop computer and cellphone among other articles missing.
Neighbours confirmed seeing the man leaving the premises with the articles, but did not realize that the man had returned and broken into the premises. Other residents and relatives also confirmed seeing the man with the articles.
The matter was reported and the police have since launched a hunt for the convict.
Amsterdam was sent to Jail on March 20, after he was fined $100,000 or eight months in jail. He had pleaded guilty to snatching a quantity of gold jewellery from a bartender.
Amsterdam appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. He pleaded guilty to stealing a gold chain, a pair of earrings and nine finger rings on March 17, from Farida Mohamed, of Second Avenue, Bartica.
He had stated that he was under the influence of alcohol but police said that Amsterdam was visiting the bar at the time when he snatched the chain from around the woman’s neck. The rings and earrings were attached to the chain.
The matter was reported and Amsterdam was arrested at Itaballi Landing. The items were found in his possession.
After spending less than a month in jail, he was among four prisoners released on April 13, last after their fines were paid for by Food for the Poor.
After they were released they were treated at the FFTP’s Office at a simple ceremony, which included a special lunch and words of encouragement from the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FFTP Incorporated in Florida, Robin Mahfood.
They were also addressed by FFTP Chairman in Guyana, Paul Chan-A-Sue; CEO Kent Vincent; Acting Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels and Monsignor Terrence Montrose who said a special prayer for the inmates.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, food hampers that included loaves of bread, clothing, personal care items and bibles were given to the inmates. Cash for assistance with transportation was also provided.
Despite all of this, Amsterdam upon arrival at home committed the dastardly act.
