A Berbice businessman has taken the initiative to reward the brave police detective constable who risked his life to apprehend an armed bandit, who was on a way to commit a robbery and execution.
Contractor Peter Lewis presents Detective Constable Emanuel Davidson with a cheque. The presentation was made at Central Police Station, New Amsterdam.
Businessman Peter Lewis of the Associated Construction Services on Wednesday travelled to the office of B Divisional Commandeer, Assistant Commissioner, Ian Amsterdam. In the presence of all the senior officers of the Division, Lewis handed over a cheque to Detective Constable Emanual Davidson for his bravery and excellent work done during the arrest of notorious criminal Cortez Fraser.
Fraser, a former national junior athlete was earlier released from jail.
Around 16:30 hrs on the March 10, last, Detective Constable Emanuel Davidson was driving along the Corentyne Highway in the vicinity of Albion when he observed a motorcyclist trailing a car. The vehicle was being driven by a Port Mourant resident.
When the driver attempted to make a U-turn, the motorcyclist rode into the car and fell to the ground. He then got up, but the detective observed that the motorcyclist was acting in a strange manner and appeared to be somewhat “nervous”.
The motorcyclist removed his helmet, and immediately recognized the individual who was once convicted for armed robbery.
The detective also observed that the motorcyclist had left the bike on the road and entered the car he collided with.
The detective proceeded to trail the car, which stopped near the Hampshire playground. Fraser then exited the car and pulled out a firearm and threw it into a nearby trench.
The detective then went to the area where the firearm was thrown and found a .38 revolver with four matching rounds.
Further investigation revealed that the motorcycle had a false number plate and was stolen from Reliance, East Canje Berbice, a week before.
Further interrogation of the suspect revealed that there was a plan to rob and execute a popular Berbice businessman from Rose Hall Town.
Divisional Commander Assistant Commissioner, Ian Amsterdam had stated that because of the detective’s bravery a life was saved; a firearm and a motorcycle were recovered.
Lewis, for his part stated that he was informed of the heroic work of the police and admired their bravery. He also mentioned that the police would put their lives on the line and must be encouraged for their bravery.
Commander Amsterdam thanked Lewis for recognizing the hard work being done by the police and for coming forward with his timely reward.
The capture of Cortez Fraser, now notorious bandit led to the capture and charging of two men in the murder/ robbery of 21-year old Harikrishna devotee Chaitanya Kishundyal.
The victim was attacked and shot by four gunmen on February 4 at his Lot 28 First Street, Swamp Section, Rose Hhall, Corentyne.
One of the men is a notorious criminal Daniel Mc Clennon called “Dutty” 20 of 163 Second Street Rose Hall Town. The other is Sadif Persaud called “Guitar” of Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.
