Team Coco’s Hamza Eastman came out winner of last Sunday’s Chin Chan Family and Friends sponsored 65-mile cycle road race from the city to the Coca Cola sign on the Linden, Soesdyke Highway returning to the village of Grove on the East Bank of Demerara for the finish.
Pedaling off from Homestretch Avenue, Eastman capitalized on a number of misfortunes suffered by some riders including Raynauth Jeffrey to win in Two Hours 43 Minutes 54 Seconds.
The top six was completed by Christopher Griffith, Michael Anthony, Walter Grant-Stuart, Akeem Wilkinson and Paul De Nobrega in that order. Briton John of United We Stand Cycle Club has continued his winning ways with victory in the junior category ahead of Jason Cameron and Adealie Hodge.
The veteran category saw some rearranging in terms of the usual placing with Warren ‘Forty’ McKay emerging winner in the process relegating Lear Nunes to the runner-up spot with the dominant Junior Niles settling for third.
Winner of the female segment of the race was Deance Welch, while the top mountain bike cyclist was Keon Thomas.
Jeffrey, who rides for the USA based Pharmaco Cycle Club, encountered mechanical issues on the downward journey and was forced to discontinue the race which saw Eastman, Anthony, Griffith and Wilkinson breaking away from the pack at Craig Village on the upward journey and never looked back. Anthony had suffered a puncture on the downward journey at Garden of Eden but still found the resolve to storm back to claim the third place, while Wilkinson was dropped at Friendship coming back which afforded Physically Challenged cyclist Grant-Stuart to catch up with him thereby edging him for fourth place.
