Dear Editor,
I would like to comment on “Police probe $20 M-plus rates and taxes at Grove/Diamond NDC” in the Kaieteur News, Tuesday, March 14, p. 3. I hope you highlight this letter merely as informational purposes to the uninformed people of Grove/Diamond, in which they have elected officials based on friendship and other issues, rather than representation of the people’s interest.
It was with great pleasure to read that some in the NDC of Grove/Diamond have come under the radar. From traversing the Grove/Diamond area frequently, both driving and walking, I could not deny myself the shock and awe of failures in all areas of community leadership, especially the jungle-like vegetation which is an invitation for thieves, roads with large pot-holes and loads of sand in the middle of roads (at construction sites), trenches completely covered with grass and interfering with the already poor drainage system, street lights either inoperable or not installed, while at the same time these so-called community leaders sitting on their hands doing nothing and enjoying themselves with hard earned taxpayers’ money.
Take for example, at the second bridge; one of the local representatives resides at the spot immediately upon making the right turn off the main road bridge. Instead of this representative doing what is right for her community, she has tolerated additional harm by erecting the Evolution Barber shop in close proximity to the road. Patrons of this barber shop would park their vehicles in such a way that it hinders smooth flowing traffic in this quiet neighbourhood, as well as, drunk patrons would be standing on the road, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Just a few feet from her abode there are large potholes on the road and by the bridge, yet she has done nothing. Straight down her street has a garbage dump by the trench including refrigeration units, stoves, and other hazardous metals. If this is not open and blatant abandonment of civic duties perpetrated by the NDC, then what is? Further, Mr. Editor, if this is a residential area, why are these business allowed to pop up without oversight or accountability, or is it that the NDC taking a blind eye for reasons best left out of the media?
As it stands, Grove looks like a jungle and it is difficult to comprehend that the residents are not even in tune of what is going on in their back yards, nor saying anything about it, because it appears as though a bad hand of cards have been dealt to them – a way of life unlike that of the heartless NDC administrators. No one should take an office if they cannot serve the citizens’ interest, as is evident with this NDC, [and for that matter throughout the country], as they have learned from the madness from the previous government. Let me interject that I have spoken with residents in the community regarding the NDC, and I have been told that when they asked about taxes collected they have been ignored, and I have been further told that they were afraid of speaking out in fear of becoming victims.
Mr. Editor, please highlight this letter and if possible, highlight the names of the representatives of Grove/Diamond because public officials should be held accountable. Hopefully, publishing this letter would open the eyes of the public leading to a helping hand in terms of voices to get the roads repair of the pot-holes, clean the trenches, fix the street lights, and most of all place names on the streets by erecting signs. How could someone even call the police in an emergency where it’s impossible to give directions without street names and signs? Failure comes from poor leadership and lack of oversight. Attached please find some photographs need highlighting.
