“Pleased with the new players’ performance” says Coach Crandon
By Sean Devers
On Easter Monday at Providence the Guyana Jaguars, still with a final game to play,
joined Jamaica as the only teams to win three consecutive Regional First-Class titles when they beat the Windwards Volcanoes by an innings and 121 runs.
“It’s obviously a great feeling to win three titles in three years. It was a total team performance and everyone involved played their part,” said the delighted 35-year-old Esuan Crandon, the Jaguars’ Head Coach.
“Although we were without our six senior players I think this was our best batting, bowling and fielding performance at home. The players that came in really played their role especially Kemo Paul. It was good to see Hemraj and Jacobs getting fifties in their come-back game. Young Motie bowled well in the second innings. So yes I am very pleased with the way we played.”
Crandon feels the Jaguars have improved and has done tremendously well since the GCB’s Professional League started. “A lot of hard work, planning and executing contributed to this team’s success. Assad Fudadin batted brilliantly and as a senior player put his hand up and scored a century to set up the win,” the former Guyana pacer explained.
Only Shiv Chanderpaul, of the Guyana batsmen had scored a hundred before this match. Chanderpaul, who missed this match to honour his English County contract for Lancashire, is second in the Regional First-Class aggregate 622 runs behind Kyle Hope’s 649.
Crandon said this is one area that the batsmen needed to improve in. “We have been batting well but have not been converting good starts into hundreds. People remember hundreds, I hope the batsmen capitalise on the opportunity of getting a few hundreds in our last match this weekend. We have already won the tournament and there is no pressure on us,” the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club member said.
Crandon said over the past three seasons Leon Johnson has demonstrated remarkable leadership and feels Johnson is best Captain in the competition. He is the only Guyanese Captain with three Regional titles.
Johnson has been going through a lean period with the bat in the last few games but Crandon said Johnson is one of hardest workers he has known and is a very intelligent young man. “We all know that he can bat and he only needs one big innings to return to his best form and he has a great opportunity to do that in the last match,” Crandon concluded.
