Dear Editor,
A total of seventeen (17) locally based players were selected in a provisional squad of thirty (30) players, to pursue training ahead of a friendly international against Martinique at the MSC ground, Linden. Editor, before I attempt to divulge the harsh but sad realities of the situation, as it unfolded in the recent publication of the article, some comments are in order.
Firstly, I must enquire who are the individuals that comprised the selection panel? Secondly, what were the criteria for selection of the locally based players? Thirdly, were members of the selection panel actively involved in attending matches, in various competitions within the various Associations?
Fourthly, and most importantly, how many associations were playing senior competitions domestically, leading up to selections of the locals?
Once again Editor, is it a case of appeasement, or “placing the cart, before the horse?” With a total of eight (8) clubs locally being used in the selection process, it is quite mind boggling to ascertain, how Santos, Milerock, Eagles, Den Amstel and GFC with an unknown status presently could all have player(s) selected at the expense of Western Tigers and Police respectively; more so, with the latter two being dominant in the last three invitational competitions.
Finally, with Topp XX as a debutant in the ongoing Stag Elite League, along with Victoria Kings, how come not a single player from the Linden based unit was selected in addition to players from other clubs in the Elite League? When the competition got underway over two (2) years ago, publicly I enquired if the locally based players selected for senior national duties, would only be selected from the eight (8) Elite League clubs? Of course, it went unanswered.
Two years later, selections have been expanded to the Associations’ domestic tournaments. Was a Beep Test conducted, towards ascertaining the required fitness level? If for some strange reason players from the remaining Elite League clubs didn’t attract attention for the selectors. Are the clubs simply making up numbers?
