Dear Editor,
The Guyana American Patriotic Forum voices its concern at the unsupported allegations of the Opposition leader, Bharat Jagdeo, that the State Assets Recovery Agency is shaking down business persons and its members have had large increases in their bank accounts.
Our organization is dedicated to the provision of a forum that allows all Guyanese to debate and discuss freely the problems in Guyana with the clear understanding that our allegiance is to the Nation of Guyana, and not to any political party. Underpinning this cherished mission is the fervent belief in the rule of law, justice and equality.
Many in GAPF have had many opportunities to interact with Aubrey Retemyer, the chief executive officer of SARA, and have concluded that he is indisputably honest, hardworking and reliable. Mr. Jagdeo’s recent accusations against him are most shocking. Similarly, it is most difficult to believe that he would administer any organization that has corrupt members or shelter them once their prevarications became known.
SARA is a pivotal part of the government’s effort to eliminate official malfeasance and restore the country to the category of those where law and good governance predominate. The character and conduct of its personnel must infuse confidence in Guyanese, investors and international partners.
If there is any credible reason to doubt its suitability for its task then an appropriate investigation must be launched. Mr. Jagdeo is claiming that Mr. Retemyer and his office are complicit in corruption and self-aggrandizement. These are serious charges which Mr. Jagdeo must present to the relevant body. If he does not do so immediately, Mr. Jagdeo must be made to adequately explain why he is violating his responsibility to preserve and protect the Constitution of Guyana. Anything less on the part of Mr. Jagdeo should properly put him in the class of politicians whose sole objective is to score political points at the expense of truth and decency, and the stability of Guyana.
GAPF believes that Mr. Retemyer is emblematic of the type of individual who can effectuate President’s Granger’s much sought after goal of removing corruption from government. They should not be turned away or discouraged by unsubstantiated attacks on their integrity. A better Guyana rests on Guyanese inside and outside demanding a higher standard of behaviour from their leaders.
