Dear Mr. Editor,
It was exactly 21:36hrs Saturday night on the 15th of April that I got a whatsapp message from one of my good friends in Jamaica congratulating me on the victory in the 100m. I was surprised at first, I taught it was Kenisha Phillips who had won, but when I text him back he said no. To my surprise it was in the men’s U20 100m final. I must say I was surprised because as we all know around the world that the Jamaicans have dominated that event for decades and it was just a hard thing to grasp. I mean for any Jamaican to see that not only they lost the event but they got third. I am happy, I went to work thanking all my co-workers and friends for their support and man they celebrated with me.
Needless to say that this victory didn’t come easy it was met with a lot of let downs from the beginning, down to the last minute before the athletes could have left the shores of Guyana. The Government never give a cent to these athletes for this games and also at the last minute said that they cannot take the athletes to the airport which force them to hire a bus to get them to the airport and I hope that the government officials stay away from the athletes when they return, don’t go to the airport and meet them.
When the athletes were about to leave the shores in Guyana I made sure that some of the money that they needed was there in the account so that they could travel, I also made sure by keeping in touch with the association to know if anything else is needed. I also called Basil Bradshaw and asked him if he can contribute because as he knows almost every year I do call him and ask him to do something for the team. It’s things like these that made me start to give back to the athletes of Guyana because I believed this was possible.
I also have immediate plans for Mr. Caesar to get to the next level and we are not talking about leaving the shores of Guyana for another country, we are going to start developing these athletes right at home with help from overseas.
I am wondering now that we have gotten the gold medal that have eluded us for so long what help are we going to get from the Private Sector and the Government since we all like to sit down in front of our television and talk about what should and shouldn’t be done, now you have the chance to do your part. Are we going to let these talents go to waste again?
I have pledged to walk forward with these kids hand in hand even if I get no help because I am not going to let these kids fail.
