The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) has issued a call for all teachers and students to support the 2017 Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Les Harris T20 Cricket Competition that it will host at several venues in Guyana, beginning today at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) Ground.
The defending Caribbean Teachers’ T20 Cricket Champions, Jamaica arriving in Guyana to compete in the 2017 Championships here this week.
The Les Harris Cricket Competition is a biennial limited overs contest that CUT organises. The last two tournaments were held in St. Vincent in 2011 and St. Lucia 2013. The Jamaica Teachers Association is winners of the last three tournaments.
Les Harris was a Barbarian school teacher, who played cricket for Barbados in the 1940s. He later became radio sports commentator. General Secretary of GTU, Corretta McDonald said that the union is elated to participate in the revival of the tournament.
“I am honoured and excited that the Guyana Teachers Union was able to revive the tournament after an absence in 2015 and to be the host of this years’ tournament. We have recognised that sports is the vehicle that breaks barriers and builds camaraderie,” McDonald said.
The GTU General Secretary, who is also a 3rd Vice-President for CUT with responsibility for sports and culture, indicated to Kaieteur Sport that sports can forge the establishment of new relationships, which can have far reaching effects. McDonald said that organising and event of such magnitude was challenging, but they have reached the stage where the first ball will be bowled this morning at 10am.
“It was quite a challenge to put all the pieces together, nevertheless, we are here now, and it is time for the tournament to begin. I extend an Amazon Welcome to the Land of Many Waters to our colleagues from Jamaica, Bahamas and Trinidad,” she said.
McDonald also used the forum to encourage the Guyanese team to use their advantage of playing at home to secure the coveted regional title. She encouraged fellow teachers and students as well as Guyanese to come out and support the local team.
