For the first time in Carifta history Guyana will have two swimmers in the Open-Water
Swim (OWS), with Daniel Scott and Alex Winter both entered in the Boys 16-18 category.
Scott and Winter showed potential in OWS during 2016 – placing 1st and 2nd respectively in a Bartica OWS organised by the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) in April and 1st and 3rd in the “Sawaki” Bartica-to-River View OWS on September 11th.
They then entered the Maracas Bay Classic (Trinidad; September 18th) where, in their first and only attempt at swimming in the sea, they placed 9th and 20th of sixty swimmers in the Men’s Open 2,650m event.
Both swimmers are members of the Dorado Speed Swim Club and the club asked GASA to enter them in the Carifta OWS. Permission was granted and the boys leave Guyana today to participate in the 5k swim on Wednesday.
Open-Water Swimming differs significantly from pool swimming, not only in the choppiness of the water, but also in the battle to hold your course without the accustomed pool markings.
Although the Carifta 5k is almost double their previous distance and they will be competing against swimmers from the “sun and sand” islands, Scott and Winter are prepared to do their best. They will be accompanied by Coach Ewin Enmore who participated in the 2016 GASA/FINA Open Water Coaching Clinic.
