Playing before a handful of fans on one of the ‘old’ pitches, the Guyana Jaguars ended
the opening day of their ninth round Digicel Regional First-Class match against the Windwards Volcanoes in firm control at Providence yesterday.
In sultry conditions the visitors were blown away for 95 by an incisive 10-over spell of medium pace bowling from 19-year-old Essequibian Kemo Paul. Paul snatched 6-28 in only his second match at this level and got support from 22-year-old Berbice pacer Romario Shepherd (2-17), in his fourth match at this level.
Steven Jacobs took 1-5 from his only over while Sunil Ambris top-scored with 29 which included six fours. Shane Shillingford, the only other batsman to reach 15, was run out for 24 after hitting a four and two sixes.
The Jaguars were 209-2 by the end of the day with the lights turned on. Assad Fudadin (113) and night watchman Gudakesh Motie (2) were at the crease. Fudadin has so far faced 172 balls, batted for 240 minutes and hit 12 fours and two sixes.
The left-hander added 107 in 106 minutes with Rajendra Chandrika who reached the boundary five times from 57 balls to give their team a solid foundation. The 23-year-old Chanderpaul Hemraj, back in First-Class action after five matches and three years, passed his
previous best of 34, making 54 from 202 balls and 110 minutes with five fours and two sixes before he fell just before the close after adding 92 with Fudadin.
By Lunch the Volcanoes were precariously placed at 78-7 with Shillingford counter-attacking on 18 and the left-handed Larry Edwards on five after Shepherd had started the slide by removing openers Devon Smith for a second ball duck and Tyrone Theophile (1) to leave on 3-2.
Paul, who missed the last match in Barbados due a cut finger, trapped Jerlani Robinson (2) LBW at 6-3 before dismissing Andre Fletcher (13), Kaveem Hodge for a duck and Kyle Mayers (6) as the Volcanoes imploded to 29-6.
Ambris was trapped in front to Paul at 71-7 before Shillingford and Edwards took their team to Lunch but after the interval Shillingford was run out looking for a suicidal run after an LWB from Paul was turned down.
Jacobs rocked back the stumps of Delorn Johnson (0) and Paul polished off the innings by getting rid of Edwards for 12 and the Jaguars, hunting their third consecutive First-Class title, were large and in charge in the own backyard.
When the Jaguars began their reply Chandrika on-drove Sherman Lewis elegantly for four and repeated a similar shot for the same results, this time off of Mayers to post the 50 in 10.1 overs.
Fudadin danced into Shillingford’s first ball and deposited it over long-off for six before smashing him for four.
The left-hander, who has played three Tests, stroked Lewis for four and reached his 22nd fifty in the 16th over, lofting Shillingford one bounce to the extra cover boundary. His half century took just 53 balls and was decorated with two fours and a six as he continued to dominate the partnership with Chandrika and by Tea the Jaguars were 92 without loss from 20 overs with Fudadin on 60 and Chandrika 29.
After the break Chandrika was caught behind as Johnson made the break through to bring Hemraj to the middle and he and Fudadin batted with authority as the flayed the bowling to all parts of lush green outfield. Fudadin reached his sixth ton from 149 balls and 207 minutes with 11 fours and two sixes while Hemraj, who dumped Hodge back over his head for six to move into the forties and soon reached his maiden50 from 93 balls, 107 minutes with five fours and two sixes.
Hemraj edged Shillingford to the keeper before Fudadin, who will want go past his highest First-Class score of 122 today and Motie saw their team safely to the close.
