Overseas based Guyanese and former national cycling champion Wilbert Benjamin has extended his benevolence to the Guyana Police Force. Benjamin now a businessman and owner of the Benjamin Sports Store and the recently opened Benjamin Fitness Gym and the Benjamin car wash has given free membership to the senior officers of B Division of the Guyana Police Force at the commissioning of the fitness gym which was held on March 13th. Benjamin, a fitness enthusiast, promised to give a few influential persons and community leaders free membership with his gym.
On Wednesday Benjamin along with cycling coach and founder of the Flying Ace Cycle Club, Randolph Roberts visited the office of Commander of the Police B Division Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam in New Amsterdam and handed over the membership cards to Amsterdam. Four membership cards were handed over. Those catered for are Amsterdam, Senior Superintendent Errol Watts, Detective Officer, Deputy Superintendent Gary McAllister and Traffic Officer, Assistant Superintendent Williams.
The other officers will be presented with their membership cards upon the provision of the relevant information by the Commander.
The multimillion dollars Benjamin Fitness Gym along with the Benjamin Cycling and Sports Store and Car Wash are located at lot 220 Courtland Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
The modern fitness gym, which is situated on the upper flat of the two story building, is well equipped with all the modern training equipment including exercise bikes, tread mills, weighting lifting machines, electrical step up machines, dumbbells, barbells and cardio machines among other equipment.
At present there are already over 200 members on board. Trainers are also in place and the gym is open to regular attendees, weight and powerlifters, bodybuilders, members of sports teams and those interested in just keeping fit.
It is open on a daily basis and everyone is welcome to join. Regular members are given a free gym jersey, towel and gym gloves, yoga mat and step counter.
Benjamin, a native of Berbice, was a former national cyclist who represented Guyana at both the junior and senior levels. He was also a former school and junior champion who won the national school championship on three consecutive occasions.
He still rides in his adopted homeland of Canada where he also operates a sports store. (Samuel Whyte)
