Ranks from the Guyana Police Force’s Major Crimes Unit were last night grilling the son of 82-year-old Rudolph Ross, as speculation intensified that someone deliberately set the pensioner’s home alight while he slept inside.
‘B’ Division Commander Ian Amsterdam confirmed that members of the Major Crimes team were assisting his ranks. He also revealed that police have been granted approval by the courts to further detain the son, who was taken into custody on Monday.
“While the fire service investigators suggest that this may be arson, we still have to prove that it is,” Amsterdam said.
Kaieteur News understands that the son has provided police with various alibis regarding his whereabouts at the time of the fire, which occurred at around 04.30 hrs on Sunday.
A source said that the son had stated, among other things, that he was in the company of a woman at the time. However, he has reportedly been unable to produce the woman to back up his claim.
One of the things that reportedly raised suspicion of arson was the discovery of a kerosene container at the scene of the fire.
Rudolph Ross’ son, who is reportedly a former member of the Guyana Police Force, is said to have recently remigrated to Guyana, and was staying at his father’s Kildonan home.
Police have received information that the father and son had an argument the day prior to the fire. The argument reportedly stemmed from the son wanting the property to be transferred to his name but his father was not in agreement.
Rudolph Ross lost his life after he was trapped in the fire that engulfed his property at Lot 14 Kildonan Village, Corentyne, Berbice. The blaze reportedly started in the kitchen, but an individual who knew Mr. Ross insisted that he was not the sort of individual who would have forgotten something on his stove.
A Post Mortem Examination conducted on the badly burnt body revealed that the elderly man died of suffocation due to smoke inhalation.
