A medical doctor who examined Robert Mangal revealed that there were signs of assault and
intoxication when he was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Dr. Roy Samlall testified yesterday that Mangal was also unresponsive. The witness noted that upon examining the patient, he found that there was an injury to the right side of his head and swelling to his right elbow.
According to Dr. Samlall, a CT scan was ordered and conducted on the victim. The scan revealed that there was bleeding in the right temporal lobe and blood clots in the brain.
The witness told the court that the injuries were considered life-threatening. As such, a medical procedure was recommended to remove the blood clots. Afterwards, Mangal was placed at the High Dependency Unit (HDU), for further medical monitoring.
Robert Mangal called “Trevor” was allegedly murdered on July 6, 2013, at Enmore, East Coast Demerara. Deosaran Bisnauth was subsequently identified as the suspect and arrested for the murder. According to the facts presented by the State, the two people were said to have been imbibing at a shop in Enmore, when the incident occurred.
Bisnauth’s trial commenced before Justice Navindra Singh and a 12-member mixed jury at the Georgetown High Court on Monday. The accused who is nicknamed “strokes mouth,” has since pleaded not guilty to the charge.
An eyewitness account revealed that Bisnauth used a piece of wood and dealt Mangal lashes about the body before he collapsed to the ground unconscious.
This account was given by Karran Bharrat Chattergoon called Manoj. The witness was called to the stand by State Prosecutors, Tuanna Hardy and Siand Dhurjon on Wednesday. Chattergoon recalled that the victim had taken him to a shop in the area to drink.
The man recounted that they purchased half bottle of liquor and some cigarettes from the shop. Chattergoon said that after he collected the liquor, he heard the accused arguing with his friend, Mangal.
The witness said that at the time, Mangal was unarmed, but Bisnauth picked up a piece of wood and dealt the man “about three lashes across his back” after which, he (Mangal) fell, facedown to the ground.
The witness told the court that he quickly left the shop with his liquor in hand. Questioned, why he did not intervene, the witness said that he didn’t want to get lashes too.
“I go to the shop to drink. So when I see dat I pick up my liquor and go ‘long me way,” Chattergoon added in response to questions by the Judge.
The witnesses also faced questions from Defence Counsel Bernard De Santos, but he maintained his testimony.
Under questioning, the witnesses repeatedly told the court that Mangal was unarmed. The accused had claimed that Mangal attacked him with an object (a bottle) and he picked up the wood and lashed him in self-defence.
Earlier in the trial, shop owner Daiwattie Guyadeen testified that she was in her shop when two men entered. She said that she knew one of them as ‘Manoj’. The other individual was a stranger.
According to the woman, the men purchased a half bottle of rum and some cigarettes. The witness recalled that one of the men asked her to call a taxi.
She said that she remained behind the counter of the shop and obliged the request of the customer. According to Guyadeen, the men joined the other customers and started to drink at the shop. The woman said that sometime after that she heard a ruckus outside.
Guyadeen told the court that she ventured to the bridge of her property, and there she noticed that a crowd had gathered.
“When I go, I see the person that asked me to call the taxi, lying on the ground … I get frightened and run back inside, because I is a pressure case…”
Guyadeen’s testimony was followed by the evidence of other witnesses including Police Detective, Paul Tirat. Tirat testified to conducting investigations into the matter. Tirat said that sometime after the incident, the accused was arrested for a crime.
According to the officer, the allegation put to the accused is that on July 6, 2013, he lashed Robert Mangal, causing him to receive injuries and to become hospitalised.
After the allegation was put to Bisnauth, Tirat recalled that the accused replied “Officer he (Mangal) run me with a bottle and I lash he to defend myself. “
The policeman also recalled that a caution statement was taken from the accused in the presence of his (Bisnauth’s) mother and other police officers.
