The highly popular Petra Organisation/GT Beer Futsal Competition heads for an exciting climax on Saturday when beaten finalist of the inaugural event, Sparta Boss, seek redemption against the upset-minded Back Circle side.
The venue is the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue and another large turnout is anticipated to bring the curtains down on what has truly been a well executed tournament to date which has prompted the Organisers to commend the fans for their good behaviour.
However, before the final, the third place playoff between dethroned champion Bent Street and Sophia could set the tone for a fascinating night of action.
In the feature clash, Sparta Boss, definitely the steadiest team in the shorter version of the game will look to expunge the bad memories suffered earlier in the competition when they lost to Back Circle by a 2-3 margin.
They looked impressive in their semi-final game against Sophia, winning 4-1 with Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, Devon Millington, Cleon Forrester, Sheldon Shepherd, Eusi Phillips, Solomon Austin and Denis Edwards, the key to their chances of winning.
Richardson and Millington have been the main architects of Sparta’s success along with Shepherd and with the form they are in it will be interesting to see what strategy Back Circle will employ to stop their raids on goal.
On the other hand, Back Circle’s defensive proficiency is second to none in the competition and if there is any team that could deny the offensive juggernauts it is them.
Back Circle have also shown offensive capabilities as well with Stephon McLean, Selwyn Williams, Akeemo Anthony, Sylvester Richardson, Curtez Kellman and Keron Joshua, all capable of turning a game on its head.
The one assurance is that the game will provide end to end action from the onset, but the outcome hangs in the balance. The preceding encounter between Bent Street and Sophia is also proving difficult to choose a winner.
In terms of lineup, Bent Street have a star-studded one with players the calibre of Konata Manning, Colin Nelson, Dwight Peters, Anthony Abrams, Joshua Browne, Okanie Fraser and William Europe, all excellent players in this format as well.
However, whether or not they could stay with the pace of a fit Sophia unit will be the test that they will have to survive. Dwayne Lowe, Akeem Jaikissoon, Desmond Cottam, Shem Arthur, Sheik Kamal Orlando Jordan, Simon Emmanuel and Joshua Kamal have played as a team and could be a handful for even as strong a side as Bent Street. The winning team will receive $400,000 and the championship trophy, while the runner-up, third and fourth places teams collect $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the championship will pocket $50,000 and a trophy, while the Highest Goal Scorer and Best Goalkeeper will walkway with $25,000 each and the respective accolades.
The other sponsors on board are NaMilCo and Star Party Rentals.
