Committed to working with communities towards the enhancement and development of sports across the spectrum, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has once again proven that they are going to also walk the walk.
Earlier this week, the NSC through Director of Sport Christopher Jones acquiesced to a request by the organisers of the Super 4 Massive Easter Sunday Football Fiesta that will feature the top four teams affiliated to the West Demerara Football Association.
Jones and team, under the commission’s ‘Light it Up’ initiative will be providing lights for what is anticipated to be an exciting evening of football.
”The NSC is happy to be once empowering and driving development by creating the avenue for our athletes to be involved in high level competition.
I am aware of the level of competiveness among the West Dem. teams so we are happy to see this level of rivalry continue, thus our contribution.”
Jones also noted that he was impressed with the fact that the Super 4 Massive group, Alex Greene a former junior national player, Akantunde Rudder aka Rigget, Roger Miller and Miles Miller, all former residents of Den Amstel have come together to give back not only to the community, but the association.
”It is always good to see when former players and villagers see the need to give back to the sport and community which made them successful.
The fact that these four young men have taken up this challenge is commendable. I wish the competing teams best of luck and urge their supporters to come out in their numbers on Sunday to cheer them on.”
Coordinator of Sunday’s activity, Franklin Wilson, expressed thanks on behalf of the organisers to Jones and the NSC for their partnership in the venture. Following the draw on Sunday last, Pouderoyen and Eagles United of Stewartville will square off in the first semi final which would be played for two halves of 20 minutes each before two more rivals, home team Den Amstel and Uitvlugt Warriors battle for a place in the final.
The respective semi final winners will clash in the final which would be preceded by the third place match between the semi final losers.
The winning team will walk away with $100,000; losing finalist $50,000 while the winner of the third place match will earn $20,000.
