Dear Editor,
Our committee has made history! Last year, we mobilized thousands of Guyanese from every demographic, for the successful and historic New York Golden Jubilee celebration. Moreover, our multi-ethnic, multi-cultural committee of 163 members, from 25 organizations in 9 States, is unprecedented in its diversity. We will continue to build on this inclusiveness to help create the harmonious Guyanese society we all desire.
This year, we can do it again! Our committee’s 51st Independence anniversary celebration is from Independence Day, May 26 to June 11, 2017. The theme is “Celebrate Guyana – Reflect our Journey” Our celebration will be inclusive. Commemorative events will be hosted in the major Guyanese communities to engender greater camaraderie amongst us and greater participation by all.
We therefore invite you to the Flag Raising Ceremony on Independence Day, May 26, 2017 (A.M) in Manhattan. Cocktail Reception & Awards Ceremony on May 26, in Queens (P.M). There will be an Interfaith Service on Sunday, May 28, Brooklyn; Cricket competition on June 4, in Queens; soccer tournament on June 10 (A.M), in Brooklyn; Independence festival on June 10 (P.M.), in Brooklyn; a Mashramani Parade on Sunday, June 11, on Church Ave., Brooklyn. The Unity Concert will immediately follow the parade on June 11, 2017, (tentatively) at last year’s venue – South Shore High School Park, Brooklyn.
Guyana’s Head of State, President David Granger, ministers of the Guyana government, as well as US Federal, State and local elected officials and others are among our invited guests. We will continually update you about our celebration through our website: www.celebrateguyanainnyc.com, as well as via our various promotions. Please spread the word about our 51st Independence Anniversary celebration in New York City from May 26, 2017 to June 11, 2017. Share this information with your email contacts and on social media. We celebrate our nation’s 51st Independence anniversary with the unswerving belief that unity is the cardinal pillar of a cohesive nation.
We must therefore eschew divisions and, with beaming national pride, demonstrate oneness as a people. Our Committee’s foremost objective is fostering unity among and between Guyanese of all races, class and creed. We are not infallible. There will be challenges to our mission to engender harmony, but we pledge to join all like-minded Guyanese to toil unceasingly in the vineyard of national cohesion.
Let’s celebrate together as “One People, One Nation, One Destiny!”
