Police yesterday recovered the body of a 20-year-old man at an East Bank Essequibo foreshore, a day after he drowned while taking his girlfriend for a swim.
The victim, identified as Richard Ramkissoon, of Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara, is believed to have drowned around 08.30 hrs on Sunday, while assisting his 19-year-old girlfriend, Bibi Hussain, to swim near the Parika, Essequibo Sea Dam.
Passersby had managed to rescue Hussain.
According to reports, Ramkissoon, who works at a Vreed-en-Hoop store, had visited his girlfriend, who lives near the Parika Sea Dam, around 08.30 hrs on Sunday.
The girlfriend reportedly indicated that she was going to the river “to dump chicken skin,” and Ramkissoon and the girlfriend’s 14-year-old sister accompanied her.
Ramkissoon reportedly then suggested that they all swim. When both girls said they could not swim, the youth reportedly said they would hold onto him while he took them into the water.
He reportedly took the younger sister out first, and brought her back to the shore, but he told the elder girl to “put her hands around his neck,” while he took her into the river.
With the girlfriend clinging to his neck, Ramkissoon reportedly swam some 20 feet out from the shore, when he suddenly began to experience difficulty swimming.
He then reportedly began to sink, but made an effort to push his girlfriend to the surface.
An alarm was raised, and persons nearby plunged in and rescued the elder sister but were unable to locate Ramkissoon.
