Dear Editor,
Your editorial “The Time Will Come” (April 6, 2017) argues that because of the consequences of global climate change “the time will come when we will have to move” the capital to the Interior. It then goes on to argue, correctly, that “moving the capital is certainly not an option at this stage of our development. We simply do not have the money.” But unremarked upon is that in a few years it is likely that Guyana will emerge as a petroleum exporter and when it does, at least a partial relocation will become financially feasible. But more than money will be required if interior settlement is to rescue the country from the rising Atlantic Ocean. It will take many years of planning to ensure that the move will be implemented successfully. Now is the time to start the process.
