A 15-year-old student from Bush Lot Secondary School yesterday afternoon died on
the roads. Dead is Luke John, of Lot 208 Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.
The dead lad’s sister, Wanita Ramjit, 22, said that her brother had just left his afternoon lessons and made a stop at her house in Cotton Tree Village.
“He went to lesson and he stopped out here at my house to collect a phone. He was going to Rosignol from me to buy a battery for the phone when I heard neighbours hollering that something happen.”
She stated that upon checking to see what was the commotion, she was informed that it was her brother who was struck down and hurled several feet away by a speeding car.
Ramjit stated that she ran to her brother’s assistance but he was barely clinging on to his life.
She made attempts to have him transported to the Fort Wellington Hospital but onlookers refused to assist.
It took her approximately half of an hour before her brother was picked up and rushed to the hospital. Upon arrival at the Fort Wellington Hospital he was transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital. He reportedly died on the way there.
The driver of the speeding car fled the scene after hitting the lad. John received injuries to his head, arms and legs. He was the youngest of three siblings.
The sister who was still in shock told Kaieteur News, “I still can’t believe my brother is gone. He was so loving; no-one wanted to help my brother”. She stated that he attended church regularly and did well in school.
Ramjit added that her brother wanted to pursue medicine after the completion of school. Police are on the hunt for the driver of the speeding car.
