Massy Caledonia AIA, Grove Hi Tech Football Club, an affiliate of the East Bank Football Association has seen two more of their young players gaining overseas contracts.
Twenty year-old Lloyd Matthews (defender) and 19 year-old Denzil Crawford (midfield/forward) have signed with Antigua and Barbuda’s Grenades Football Club which has qualified for the Caribbean Club Championship finals that will be played at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, from May 14-21, next.
Grenades Football Club President, Chester Hughes said he was happy to reach out to the Guyanese club for the two young players whom he believes with this opportunity can do themselves and Grenades FC proud. Georgetown Football Club’s Curtez Kellman has also signed with the Antigua club; the trio is expected to leave Guyana this week to join their other teammates.
Grenades FC has a rich history ever since established and has been competing in the Antiguan and Barbuda Football Premier Division since 1990; the club is based in St. John’s, Antigua.
Grenades FC has been drawn with two-time defending champion and tournament host Central FC (Trinidad & Tobago) in Group A and will also face Cibao FC (Dominican Republic).
San Juan Jabloteh FC (Trinidad & Tobago) was sorted in Group B with Portmore United (Jamaica) and Racing FC (Haiti), in Group B.
East Bank Football Association President, Franklin Wilson said that he is excited for the two players to have been given such a huge opportunity to represent at the highest club level in the Caribbean.
”Both Matthews and Crawford have been consistent high performers at the junior and senior levels for their club, playing in the various age group East Bank competitions. They have also done well in the inter association tournaments in the past two years so I am confident once they continue to be disciplined and work hard, they will reap the rewards.
This is a chance for them to prove that they have the requisite talent to propel their respective careers to another level, thanks to Grenades FC.”
Wilson also expressed thanks to both the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association and the Guyana Football Federation for the roles they both played in facilitating the transfers mere hours before the closing time on the final day.
Grenades will face Central FC in their opening game on Sunday May 14 at 20:00hrs, two days later they will oppose Cibao FC also at 20:00hrs. The respective group winners will play in the final with the second placed teams clashing in the 3rd and 4th placed matches on May 18.
The competition’s champion will qualify for the newly re-formatted Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, while the second – third- and fourth-place clubs will participate in the Confederation’s newly launched club championship for Caribbean and Central American clubs that kicks off in August.
