Commander of ‘C’ Division Marlon Chapman is seeking the public’s help to identify the driver who fled the scene after hitting down and killing 23-year-old Corneille Grimmond on Sunday night.
Stating that “a life had been lost,” Chapman said that he is seeking assistance from “anyone with information that can lead to an arrest.”
He said that what has made the investigation difficult is that no one has reported seeing the driver, and police found nothing at the scene that would allow them to identify the vehicle.
Grimmond, of Lot 6 Happy Acres, East Coast Demerara, was found almost lifeless with multiple injuries, consistent with that of a motor vehicular accident, on the Happy Acres Public Road about 23:00hrs on Sunday.
A driver has told police that he was proceeding east along the northern side of the road, when he observed Grimmond lying on the roadside “panting for breath.”
With assistance from two of his passengers, and ranks from a Professional Guard Service vehicle, the driver rushed Grimmond to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body is presently at the Hospital’s Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigators have retrieved several pieces of a broken vehicle mirror at the scene. The victim was found about 70 feet from the debris. Police have also obtained statements from several individuals.
