The Haslington Market Square will come alive with activity when the 5th edition of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ East Coast of Demerara leg gets cracking tomorrow.
The event, which will be played over three days, is expected to feature 16 teams from East Coast communities as they battle for prize monies in excess of $600,000 including trophies.
The winning team will take home $250,000 and the Championship trophy along with the right to represent the zone at the National Playoffs in June that will feature teams from each leg, while the second, third and fourth placed finishers receive $150,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
Defending champion Beterverwagting (BV)-B will no doubt be keen to get into action with the focus being to make it to the National Playoffs.
However, the early word coming out of the competing communities is that the champs will not have it easy this time since all the teams have begun preparations which are said to be going well.
Among the teams likely to participate are last year’s beaten finalist North Haslington and previous champions BV-A, Melanie-A and Plaisance-A.
Teams such as Victoria Churchyard United, Nabaclis, Golden Grove, Melanie-B, Bare Root, Future, Victoria Eagles, Plaisance-B and Buxton are among the usual participants.
So far, the Georgetown, West Demerara/East Bank Demerara and Berbice Zones have been completed.
The Linden and Bartica zones will be staged following the completion of the East Coast Demerara leg.
Official fixtures as well as the format for the tournament are expected to be announced shortly.
