Even the doctor needs to see another doctor sometimes. This was particularly emphasised yesterday when the Region Three Health and Wellness Club held an outreach at the Crane Assemblies of God Church.
At the event, which spanned the greater portion of the day offering a variety of services including BMI, blood pressure and blood sugar tests, nutritional awareness, eye tests, dental services and the donation of blood, a doctor was seeking the expertise of her colleague.
But in much the same way that a doctor recognises the need for medical attention for him or herself so must each member of the public. This notion was yesterday underscored by Chairperson of the Health and Wellness Club, Ms. Donette Castello.
According to Castello, in an invited comment, it is important for persons to seek to know their health status by taking time out to visit a health facility at least twice per year.
The responsibility of the Club is merely to assist the work already being done in the health sector but can never replace the work of the health centres and hospitals and the fact that individuals must take charge of their own health. “Do your normal check-ups at least twice per year…check your blood pressure, check your blood sugar even if you are not a diabetic. You should be able to go and do your normal checks especially if your family is predisposed to some health condition,” Castello noted.
The Chairperson revealed, “We find that many people are not aware they suffer from high blood pressure and so many other conditions until they seek medical attention…This is the only way they learn that they have a health problem and sometimes it is far gone but this should not be the case.”
But those who visited the health outreach yesterday, which followed on the heels of the third anniversary of the existence of the Club, were afforded medications that were dispensed on site yesterday.
Among those who were able to access the services offered were the residents of Crane and those of neighbouring communities.
Castello noted that the Club was especially appreciative of Pastor Colwyn Boyce and the members of the Crane Assemblies of God Church for willingly supporting its day-long outreach. The members have also expressed gratitude to the Regional Health Officer, Dr. Uthman, and all the others who voluntary donated blood yesterday.
Plans for other outreaches in the near future are already being streamlined by the Club. According Castello, the planned outreach is expected to be conducted on the Island of Leguan and yet another will be held on the West Bank of Demerara.
In order to support its efforts, the Club will be hosting a fundraising raffle which is slated to be drawn on the third Tuesday of May.
