Dear Editor,
There seems to be no end to the letters about the coming third party, the latest being last Friday in another newspaper. All the letters focus on the pros and cons of Freddie Kissoon as the possible candidate. Much to the frustration of your readers, Mr. Harris, Freddie seems hell bent on staying quiet. As his editor, Mr. Harris should you not ask him to say a word one way or the other so we can put the speculation to rest? I believe that is the role of the editor. Once Freddie disqualifies himself, we can look for other names. I have one such name. Before I get into that person, my opinion is that when Freddie does speak, he will say no. There is enough, really too much, on the life, times and philosophy of Freddie Kissoon to tell us the answer. I cannot see Freddie Kissoon running for political office. If and when he does, it would betray everything he stood for and stands for and for so long. This is a nice gentleman but I cannot see him as politician.
My choice is Major Joe Singh. For me there are only two East Indians that I believe Black people trust to be in government, Freddie Kissoon and Major—General, Joe Singh. Freddie Kissoon will have the edge because his social activism puts him in front of the Major. I think the Jagdeo libel case against Freddie has gone a long way in cementing his place among Black people. This was an East Indian who provided evidence that his own race of people in government was discriminating against Black Guyanese. As a Black man, I owe him a debt of gratitude. All Black people do.
Who else can Black people rely on to run a government without bias against another race? That person is the Major-General. My son served under the Major-General in the army. He had nothing but good words to say about an East Indian soldier that was in charge of a Black army. The Major-General has a long and distinguished career in Guyana. This is one not easily matched. Whereas Freddie Kissoon has been a Don Quixote for the downtrodden, he lacks that long service to the nation in different capacities that one would need to be in government. Twenty odd years of teaching philosophy at the university for a meager salary is a selfless task but that does not prepare you for leadership in government. In other words, though I find Freddie endearing, I don’t think he has the temperament to be a politician.
The Major-General headed the army, GECOM, GTT, advised successive government and still is serving the Guyanese people. It is not a good reflection on our country that if and when a third party is formed it could only be successful with an East Indian presidential candidate. But the Guyanese people are stuck with that situation and we have to make the best out of it. I hope the Major-General gives it some thought. We don’t have much time on our hands. I write this letter to suggest Major-General Singh as the best possible candidate but I mean no disrespect whatsoever to our serving President, Brigadier David Granger.
I hope we do not blame Mr. Granger for all the faults of the government but things are sliding and people want a third party so as to have a break with the past. Two Sundays ago, my granddaughter and I were on the road shopping at the street market outside La Penitence Market, and I couldn’t help overhearing what these two men were talking about. They were quarreling about the government and the lady vendor joined in and said that since last month sales are bad. I am wondering how they will vote. If there is a third party, and Freddie Kissoon is not interested I support Major-General Joe Singh as the only person for the job. PS: The younger generation would not know; there was a Senator and Education Minister in British Guiana by the name of CV Nunes. I wonder if you can recall this, Mr. Harris. I was named after him.
Cedric Vernon Nunes
